About 7 years ago I became interested to trace the family name after my wife did some research into her maiden name with some moderate success. I spent countless hours researching on-line and for a short period spending lots of 10p's viewing census records. I also spent the best part of a day in Portsmouth registry office looking at baptism records. I reached a point where time and effort were becoming too much with little sucess and so I belive I have gone back as far as I can. I suspect that if I found the time now that the the 1911 census is avilable it will reveal more but I just don't have the time.
Anyway, for those of you that are interested, I have established that my Great Grandfather - George was married to Alice Bore and through Genes Reunited I have exchanged e-mails with a relative of one of Alice’s sisters. George had two brothers Fred and Moses. Moses died in the 1st world war. Fred was baptised in St Agatha's Portsmouth in May 1901. I know that their parents were Moses and Harriet and well that is it really, I have no more information on Fred and I can not find any evidence of Mosses’ marriage to Harriet and thus can not really go back any further.
So there you are, not much. When I have more time I will visit the Winchester Records office but today with family and work its not going to happen.
There are a lot of Moses Purkiss's out there and many had sons called Moses, with absolute pure speculation I can assume that 'my' Moses who married to Harriet is the son of a Moses, who in turn is a son of Moses and the using information on the internet a timeline develops that suggests that I am descended from Aaron bornin Cadnem, Hampshire, UK in 1752.
The Cadnam connection means that probably like ALL Purkiss's of Hampshire that we are related to the Purkis connected to the Rufus Stone.
The inscription on the Rufus Stone reads: "Here stood the oak tree on which an arrow shot by Sir Walter Tyrrell at a stag glanced and struck King William II surnamed Rufus on the breast of which stroke he instantly died on the second day of August anno 1100. King William thus slain was laid on a cart belonging to one Purkess and drawn from hence to Winchester, and buried in the Cathedral Church of that City."
